    Research Statement
     King Walters came to Rice after a number of highly productive
    years in industrial research. Here, he initiated the development of
    atomic, molecular and surface physics research programs. His research
    focuses on manifestations of electron spin and has ranged from
    development of polarized targets for nuclear physics experiments
    through gas-phase collisions in a variety of environments to
    fundamental physics of surfaces.

    In close collaboration with Barry
    Dunning,
    Walters has studied the spin-dependence of numerous
    gas-phase reactions of spin-polarized helium atoms, has produced one
    of the most intense sources of spin-polarized electrons in the world
    and has developed a range of spin-sensitive surface probes that are
    now unlocking the secrets of magnetic behavior of surfaces and
    dynamics of particle-surface interactions.

    The newest of these surface probes entails measurement of the spin
    orientation of electrons ejected from surfaces by spin-polarized,
    helium ions. This complex technique requires the unique combination
    of basic atomic physics, surface science and laser expertise existing
    within the Rice Quantum Institute.
