    Experimental Particle Physics

As an experimental physicist, I am most interested in finding the answers to fundamental questions about the elementary fabric of matter and the state of the early universe. We know that the Standard Model of particle physics provides an accurate description of the fundamental particles and their interactions. The electroweak processes that are beautifully calculable at all levels. Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) describes the strong interaction processes well at high energies. However, we know that the Standard Model of particle physics must be incomplete, since nuclear matter composes less than five percent of the universe. To look for physics beyond the Standard Model involves searching for new particles and symmetries in nature, and it is the most important reason why the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is still operated at the CERN Laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland.

My accomplishments during my career, have involved physics and hardware. I contributed considerably to the recent LHC discoveries is the B-meson decays. I re-modified the muon trigger filters of measuring branching fraction for Bsà μ+ μ  decays. The branching ratio is very small in the Standard Model so any signal would indicate physics beyond the Standard Model. Previously I was involved in measuring properties of the top quark. These measurements could very well be the key to a deeper understanding of fundamental particle interactions. Working with the Rice group we have contributed to a number of different measurements such as: the tt production cross-section, top quark mass measurement and the W-helicity fractions from the tt semileptonic decays.
