Reginald James Dufour -- Research Statement

DR. DUFOUR came to Rice in 1976 following graduate work at Wisconsin and a two-year appointment as a National Research Council Postdoctoral Associate at the NASA Johnson Space Center. His research interests are in the areas of observational astrophysics related to gaseous nebulae and star-forming galaxies. His studies involve imagery and spectroscopy observations in the ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared spectral regions using a variety of ground-based and space-borne telescopes. Dufour was a guest observer with the IUE satellite for 12 years beginning in 1980, a general observer with the HST since 1990, and a guest investigator with the FUSE satellite since 2001. His current research projects are directed primarily towards UV spectroscopy and high resolution imagery of Galactic and extragalactic HII regions and planetary nebulae, with the aim of studying the chemical evolution of the CNO element group and Si. Toward these ends, he also studies the stellar population and star-forming history of irregular and spiral galaxies, using wide-band CCD imagery.
