Research Statement
Paul Cloutier has been a faculty member in the department since 1967. During the next decade, Cloutier's group at Rice developed rocket-borne vector magnetometer systems to study mid-latitude and auroral zone ionospheric current systems, and Cloutier served as Principal Investigator of 13 NASA ionospheric sounding rocket probes during that time. From 1968 to the present, he has also performed theoretical and experimental studies of the atmospheres of other planets, particularly Venus and Mars. He was Co-Investigator on the Pioneer Venus Bus and Orbiter Ion Mass Spectrometer experiments from 1977 to 1988, and served as Principal Investigator of that experiment from 1988 to the present. He was a Co-Investigator on the Mars Observer magnetometer experiment. He is a Co-Investigator on the Mars Global Surveyor Spacecraft MAG/ER experiment which is currently in orbit around Mars.
